Roopkund lake, also known as the “Skeleton Lake” is a high-altitude glacial lake located in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, in the Himalayan mountain range. The lake is surrounded by peaks of the Trishul and Nanda Ghunti mountain ranges and is a popular trekking destination in India. The mystery of the hundreds of human skeletons found at the edge of the lake in the past has given rise to many myths and legends.
One of the most popular legends associated with Roopkund is that of King Jasdhaval and his pregnant wife, Rani Balampa. According to the legend, King Jasdhaval and his queen Rani Balampa, along with their entourage, were on a pilgrimage to the Nanda Devi temple. But, due to a heavy hailstorm, all of them died and their bodies were buried under the ice and snow.
Another legend is that of a group of dancers and musicians who were on their way to pay homage to the goddess Nanda Devi. They were caught in a sudden hailstorm, and all of them died.
Another belief is that the skeletons are of the soldiers of a long-forgotten army that was on a campaign in the area, and were caught in a freak hailstorm.
It is also believed by some that the skeletons belong to traders and pilgrims who were caught in a landslide or avalanche.
It is worth noting that these legends and myths are not substantiated by scientific evidence, the real reason for the presence of the skeletons remains a mystery.
It is also important to note that the lake and the surrounding area are considered sacred by the local people and should be treated with respect. Visitors should be mindful of their actions and be respectful of the local culture and beliefs.
The Roopkund trek is considered to be a moderate to challenging trek, and typically takes 7-8 days to complete. The trek starts from Lohajung, a small village in the state of Uttarakhand, and passes through dense forests, meadows, and rocky terrain before reaching the Roopkund lake. Along the way, trekkers will be able to enjoy stunning views of the surrounding peaks, and experience the local culture and hospitality of the villages.
It is important to note that the Roopkund trek is a high-altitude trek, so proper acclimatization, physical fitness and necessary equipment are important. It is also advisable to consult with a doctor before planning the trek.
